LLR - Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research

We are the only UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of patients with all types of blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Our life-saving research is focused on finding causes, improving diagnosis and treatments, and running groundbreaking clinical trials for all blood cancer patients.LLR - Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research

Every 15 minutes one person in the UK of any age is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every single day more than 20 people die from blood cancer.

Since we began in 1960 we have helped to change the world in very many ways. The most significant impact that we have achieved in that time, thanks very much to the profile and the money that Beefy has attracted, is our contribution to the dramatic improvement in survival from the most common childhood leukaemia, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), survival is now 92%.

Saving young lives is of vital importance but in addition more than 28,000 adults are diagnosed with a blood cancer each year too.

We are here to stop people dying from blood cancer, we make patients´┐Ż lives better and we stop people getting blood cancer in the first place.

We won't stop until we've beaten blood cancer !LLR - Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research

Projects and funding requirements

With such a dramatic improvement in survival from childhood ALL, it could easily be assumed that the job is done, but there are many problems still to tackle before we have beaten childhood leukaemia.

First of all nearly 1 in 10 children still do not survive and for the less common acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) survival is just 64%. All children still have treatment of toxic drugs for 3 years which as well as having some devastating side-effects such as infertility and inhibited growth; severely impacts on normal family life, precious years that can't ever be replaced.

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research's current investment in childhood leukaemia is around £12 million, but this huge amount of money is made up of many different activities to beat leukaemia on all fronts. From an information booklet that can explain all aspects of the experience of going through leukaemia to a parent, to a 5-year clinical trial across the UK.

Our research focuses on finding ways to treat the children who currently relapse, understanding why some cancer cells survive chemotherapy, improving the safety and effectiveness of transplants and personalising the treatment according to the voracity of the cancer to minimise side effects where possible. Every £ that we receive works hard to ensure that we beat blood cancer.
